MUSIC MAPS

Music Maps is an app that helps people who like to travel, to discover new music from the places they visit.

PURPOSE AND CONTEXT

Music Maps was developed during my first CareerFoundry assignment. The brief - to design a music player app - allowed a multitude of developments.

I opted for designing a music app that lets people listen to artists that live or are on tour in a specific geographical area.

Being myself an avid music listener and loving to travel and discover new artists while I visit a place, I took the chance to develop a project that people like me could enjoy.

OBJECTIVE

There are many music apps that stream music from thousands of artists. But, when people want to discover new, niche or local bands, they are not the best solution, as they tend to give more space to mainstream music.

Music Maps, on the other hand, aims to help people find new music that they can love, while visiting new cities, or within the area in which they live.

This gives the user the chance to enjoy new acts and discover when small gigs take place.

APPROACH

I started by interviewing in person some potential users.

The main goal in this phase was understanding how and when a user would use the app, in order to decide on which features I needed to focus and how to logically structure the user interface.

Thanks to a user first approach and through the elaboration of user stories, I could easily identify the key functions to develop in the following steps.

KEY FEATURES

  • Let the users set their music preferences
  • Let the users change EASILY their location information
  • Be a functional music player

PROTOTYPING

I worked on various iterations of low fidelity wireframes, to establish a logical and functional hierarchy within the different elements of the app. Once the structure was set, I moved to Sketch and elaborated the mid and high fidelity wireframes.

UI DESIGN

Thanks to the efficient prototype driven approach, the UI design phase was smooth and quick.

The look and feel of the UI is inspired by the colors any big cities at night, lighted up by neon signs and with crowds of people who move from one place to another looking for a gig to listen to.
